Geophysics field trip 2025

Finally this time of the year!... When core teaching is almost over, winter is waning, days become noticeably longer and the weather wispers spring behind the corner. This is the time when we from Durham Earth Sciences pack up and leave for the Morecambe Bay with a cohort of students to do our annual GEOPHYSICS FIELD TRIP!
here below a few previews but Keep posted for more photos and reports on our recent trip

Exhausted but fulfilled   April 2025
Norway

Getting ready for a 2 hour drive back to Durham where everyone will resume their own life and quests. Sam is already pulling a long face... Indeed, here we are on the last day, ready to return home, posing at the entrance of the Castlehead Field Studies Centre of Grange-over-Sands, Lakes district. The Centre has been hosting us yearly for the last the years and they are doing a great job of boarding and lodging us, providing great meeting rooms, storage space for the equipment, and a student lounge where we can all relax while tasting a local ale in the evening. This year we appreciated the ramping up in food quality, well done to chef Wendy and keep up the good work! Also thanks to the friedly staff of the Centre: Sarah, Sonia, Rose, Dave, and others for facilitating the use of a kayak to float our equipment on the river and get some great recordings of the water bottom and of the shallow deposits close to the embankment.

GPR over water

"...about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking on the sea ..." (Mark, 6:48). There are skeptics but then again there are believers. Both have their place in geophysics...   April 2025

Who said that GPR won't go through water??
